ALKU Campus Solar Power Plant and Integrated Sustainability Actions
Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKU), located in the Mediterranean region of Türkiye, has launched a transformative sustainability initiative that combines renewable energy, circular economy practices, and inclusive education. This award-winning project, based on a self-financing model through an Energy Performance Contract (EPC), has made the ALKU campus a living laboratory for climate-friendly innovation and community engagement.
The project integrates a Rooftop and Carport Solar Power Plant (GES) with waste-to-resource systems such as compost production and pet food generation from cafeteria waste. It also includes electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, zero waste training programs, green procurement, and ISO-certified sustainability management systems (ISO 50001 and ISO 14001). The energy generated from the solar system directly powers not only the campus buildings but also the compost facility, EV stations, and sustainability-focused infrastructure.
Beyond environmental impact, the project offers practical training for students, university staff, and local communities. It serves as a replicable model for other public universities, demonstrating how EPCs can finance green infrastructure without upfront costs.
The project has been recognized nationally with a Productivity-Enhancing Project Award and internationally as the National Winner of the European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) 2025 in the category Supporting the Sustainable Transition.
